Switzerland admits non-EU/EFTA nationals on a self-employed basis, but admission is still conditional on a review of labour market conditions, and the applicant must show the self-employment will have a lasting positive impact on the Swiss labour market.
Core requirements
Individuals from non-EU/EFTA states may work in Switzerland on a self-employed basis.
Admission is conditional upon a review of labour market conditions under Article 19 of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act. Self-employment does not bypass that review.
Beyond the personal and other requirements, the applicant must demonstrate that the self-employment will have a lasting positive impact on the Swiss labour market — the overall economic interest. This is the central test on this route.
A business plan setting out the planned activities must be submitted.
An analysis of the market must be submitted.
You must set out how the workforce will develop, in both quantitative and qualitative terms, and the recruitment options.
Planned investments and forecasts for turnover and profit must be submitted so the financial conditions and the business's operating requirements can be reviewed.
Organisational ties with other businesses must be stated.
The memorandum and articles of association and an extract from the commercial register must accompany the application.
