Denmark's Pay Limit Scheme work permit, with the annual salary threshold in force, the Danish bank account requirement, the rule that employment terms may not be inferior to the professional field's standards, and the permit length with its automatic job-seeking extension.

How the system works

  1. Step 1: Get a formal employment contract with a company registered in Denmark

The Pay Limit Scheme rests on a formal employment agreement. As a general rule the employer must be a company registered in Denmark. A verbal promise or an expression of interest does not carry the application; a complete employment contract is what is required.

  2. Step 2: Check the salary against the threshold for that year

The scheme turns on one annual salary figure, which is DKK 552,000 for 2026. The amount is regulated every year on 1 January, so negotiating against the previous year's figure is the most common misstep on this route. There is no occupation list and no education tier here: the salary is the gate.

  3. Step 3: Note the two conditions beyond the salary itself

Beyond the amount, the offered terms must not be inferior to the standards within your professional field, including holiday entitlements and terms of notice. Your salary must also be paid into a Danish bank account in your own name, opened within 180 days of the permit being approved or of your entry into Denmark. Both are commonly overlooked after approval, which is when they start to affect the permit's continued validity.

  4. Step 4: Understand the permit length and the job-seeking extension attached to it

Where the employment runs four years or more, the permit is normally valid for four years. Where it is shorter, the permit covers the employment period plus an automatic six-month job-seeking extension. Normal processing time is one month, up to three months if further information is needed, and the application fee is DKK 6,810.

What commonly blocks an application

These are frequent reasons a route is closed. Absence of a listed problem is not an eligibility decision.

  • Planning against the previous year's threshold. It is regulated every 1 January, so an application submitted across the year boundary faces the new figure.

  • Meeting the salary while offering terms inferior to the professional field's standards. Holiday entitlements and terms of notice are assessed too.

  • Not opening a Danish bank account in your own name within 180 days. The salary must be paid into that account.

  • Applying on a verbal promise or an expression of interest. A formal employment contract with a company registered in Denmark is what is required.
